Salzburg 1-Day Itinerary

Munich --> Salzburg --> Vienna

We took the 7:55am train from Munich Hbf to Salzburg which cost EUR 35 for three people. The ride took about two hours and we reached Salzburg Hbf by 10 am. Luggage storage at the station's lockers were very affordable at EUR 4,50 for 24 hours. The locker was sizable and fit my 60L backpack and two carry-on suitcases. At the station we also bought all-day bus tickets for EUR 3,40 each.

Outside the station is the bus loop and we took the bus to Mirabellplatz where Mirabell Palace and Garden is located. There was a scene of the Sound of Music shot here. I'm not sure if this is the case for every Sunday but this Sunday there were many people listening to a live band under the shade of two rows of trees. I really enjoyed how musical Salzburg is.

Pedestrian bridge

A short walk crossing a pedestrian bridge lined with love locks on each side brought us to the outskirts of Salzburg Old Town. We passed by a yellow building where Mozart was born and a few plazas and churches before finally finding the funicular to Fortress Hohensalzburg. It cost EUR 11,30 per person to ride the funicular and enter the fortress.

At the top there was a panoramic view of Old and New Town. Inside the fortress was a mini museum displaying old war uniforms, weapons and more. There were also some glass cabinets filled with old wooden puppets. The fortress was fairly crowded with tourists and the indoor sections were hot where breeze didn't reach through the small windows.

We found lunch at Mozartplatz and took a much needed break from the sun. In the evening we took the 6:15pm train (scheduled for 6:08pm but came late) to Vienna. The train reached Vienna at 8:37pm and we took a tram to our hotel (EUR 2,20 for a single trip ticket.)
